aci-38-25 compliance

ASDIP FOUNDATION is a structural software that includes the design of spread, strap, combined, and wall footings, in addition to pile caps and pile analysis and design. Now ASDIP FOUNDATION complies with the concrete code ACI 318-25. Following is a brief discussion of the implementation of this new feature in the software.

ACI 318-25 Has Been Implemented

To specify the design code, go to Design > Design Criteria > Codes. In addition to the Canadian code and to the previous ACI codes, now ASDIP FOUNDATION includes ACI 318-25 as an option for the concrete design code. Select this option and the design will fully comply with the ACI 318-25 provisions.

Please note that you can specify your own load factors or specify the CSA or ASCE 7 load combinations as desired. This offers a great flexibility to the design capabilities of the software.

Key Changes Overview

The Detailed tab shows a step-by-step set of detailed calculations, which include exposed formulas and references to the code. This information is very useful for a granular check of the calculations, both during the design process, and when the project is submitted for check approval. Following are the key changes in ACI 318-25 that affect ASDIP FOUNDATION.

(ACI 13.2.6.2) One-way and Two-way Shear - Shallow foundation members directly bearing on soil or supported on closely spaced piles, and designed under previous editions of the Code, have exhibited satisfactory behavior, without consideration of the influence of size effect or flexural reinforcement effect on shear strength. The shear equations in ACI 318-14 have been restored for footings. This may result in a smaller required footing thickness.

(ACI 13.4.6.8) Pile Caps - Pile caps with piles spaced at 4 pile diameters or less exhibit increased shear strength compared with those with widely spaced piles due to arching action. These pile caps shall benefit from the shear provision noted above. The special investigation cases for one-way and two-way shear at the column face have been recalculated to comply with the new code. This may result in a smaller required pile cap thickness.

(ACI 25.4.3.1) Development Length Ldh - The expression in 25.4.3.1(a) restores the equation for hooked bar development length used in ACI 318-14. Revisions to 25.4.3.1 introduced in ACI 318-19 were found to result in appreciably increased values of Ldh for common cases, without adequate justification. This may result in smaller required hooked development lengths and therefore a smaller footing thickness.

Takeaway

Now ASDIP FOUNDATION fully complies with the concrete code ACI 318-25. This new feature affects the design of spread, strap, combined, and wall footings, as well as pile caps and pile analysis and design. The key changes include one-way shear, punching shear, and development length.
