asdip-retain-6-release

ASDIP Structural Software announces the release of ASDIP RETAIN 6 engineering software. Design professionals utilize ASDIP RETAIN software for the design of retaining walls and sheet piling. The following are some of the most important features and benefits included in this version 6.

This new version includes five modules:

  • Cantilever Retaining Wall Design – The stem material can be either concrete or masonry. The program accepts a number of load cases, such as surcharge (strap, uniform and/or concentrated), wind, and seismic. Graphical results. Construction images with the rebars.
  • Counterfort Retaining Wall Design – Easy modeling and interpretation of results. Multiple load types and load cases. Results sorted by load combination. Either soil supported or pile supported. Lateral pressures are calculated either per Rankine, Coulomb, or Equivalent Fluid theories.
  • Basement Retaining Wall Design – Up to two-stories can be modeled. Multiple load types and load cases. Either pinned or fixed base. Graphical generation of the shear, and moment diagrams. Multiple options to customize the design. Excellent quality pre-formatted reports of condensed and detailed calculations.
  • Sheet Pile Retaining Wall Design – Cantilever and anchored types. Up to four layers of soul properties can be modeled. Graphical generation of the wall pressures, the combined loading diagram, shear, moment, and deflection diagrams. Immediate calculation of embedment depth.
  • Gravity Retaining Wall Design – The stem material can be either plain concrete or rubble masonry. The program accepts a number of load cases, such as surcharge, concentrated loads, wind, and seismic. Graphical results. Construction images with dimensions.

In addition to a better layout design and dozens of improvements, the following are the most important new features and benefits in ASDIP RETAIN 6:

ASDIP RETAIN 6 New Features

Code Compliance

ASDIP RETAIN 6 complies with ACI 318-14 and 19, AISC 360-22, AASHTO LRFD-20. Load combinations per ASCE 7-05 or 16/22, or AASHTO. General analysis per IBC 2021.

Gravity Retaining Walls

ASDIP RETAIN 6 now includes a new module for Gravity Wall design.  The stem material can be either plain concrete or rubble masonry. A concrete footing can be added, either reinforced or unreinforced, to improve the bearing capacity of the wall.

A number of external loads can be modeled, such as surcharge, horizontal and vertical concentrated loads, wind, and seismic pressures. The program calculates the stability safety factors against overturning, sliding, and bearing. In addition, it performs the plain concrete design per the latest ACI 318 provisions.

AASHTO Load Combinations Including Collision

The AASHTO LRFD load combinations have been improved in ASDIP RETAIN 6 with the addition of the Collision load case as part of the Extreme events. This new feature is useful to design bridge abutments and other highway retaining structures. The structural design of the retaining walls meets the latest design provisions by AASHTO, including the type of loads applicable to the different stability failure modes. The graphical results can be sorted by load combination for granular checking.

Sheet Piling Design Includes Cohesion

ASDIP RETAIN 6 now includes the design of cantilever and anchored sheet pile retaining walls. This is a very useful module for the design of excavation and shoring projects. Several layers of soil properties can be modeled, such as the internal friction angle and cohesion, as well as the position of the water table in the area. You can specify a safety factor to affect the passive pressure in the calculation of the embedment depth.

The diagrams of pressures at both sides of the wall, combined loading, shear forces, bending moments, and deflections, are generated immediately as you enter the input data. The software considers the Short-term and Long-term analyses to calculate the required embedment depth, and the maximum shear and moment. With this information it will calculate the required structural properties of the sheet piling.

Sheet Piling Design for Seismic Loads

ASDIP RETAIN 6 now includes seismic loads in the design of Sheet Piling. The active and passive seismic pressures at the different layers are calculated per the Mononobe-Okabe method

The pre-formatted Condensed and Detailed reports are clean and well organized to present the results professionally.

Sorted Results by Load Combinations

The graphical results in ASDIP RETAIN can be sorted by load combination. With this feature the engineer can do a granular check in great detail and find out the results for any load combination, as opposed to get just the "controlling results". This is a very useful and important checking tool during the design process. This feature applies to the standard ASCE 7 or AASHTO combinations, and to the custom load combinations as well.

Once the design has been completed and optimized, the ASDIP RETAIN reports will show the controlling load combination for each limit state and member design.

Takeaway

ASDIP RETAIN 6 includes the design of several types of retaining walls, compliance to the latest design codes, AASHTO and user-defined load combinations, and a new module for the design of Gravity Walls. The design of such systems may be completed and optimized in minutes, and the results can be checked immediately.
