ASDIP FOUNDATION is a structural engineering software for the design of concrete footings. It includes the design of wall footings based on the ACI 318 and CSA A23.3 provisions. This document is a step-by-step wall footing design example using ASDIP FOUNDATION software.

Wall Footing Design Example

As an example, consider the continuous footing shown below, which supports a concrete wall in an industrial facility. The wall is placed 6" eccentrically on the footing. The soils report limits the allowable soil bearing capacity to 3 ksf. The structure is exposed to dead, live, and wind loads, whose reactions are shown below. Design the wall footing size, thickness and reinforcement.

Wall Footing Design Steps

Enter the information given in the statement of the example, which are the loads and the materials. In this example the analysis of the structure provided the reactions per load case, as shown in the statement above. Note that all loads are applied at the top of the footing. The structure is subject to lateral wind loads that will be transferred to the foundation. The At-a-Glance tab shows a summary of the design for a quick overview of your work as you go. The green check marks indicate that the checks passed.

Enter the Loads and Material Properties

Enter the material properties, such as the concrete and reinforcing steel strengths, and the densities of concrete and soil cover. Note that the service loads will be used to calculate the bearing pressure, and the program shows the controlling service load combination. The Condensed tab shows a more detailed set of calculations grouped by topic.

In this example a footing width of 3.6 ft provides a maximum bearing pressure of 2.9 ksf. The Detailed tab shows a step-by-step set of detailed calculations, with exposed formulas and references to the ACI code, for a granular check of the calculations.

Specify the Reinforcement

Enter the reinforcement information for the wall and footing. Specify the concrete cover and the bar number and size. For consistency, in this example we will use #5 rebars for both wall and footing. The footing thickness needs to be 12" to avoid development length problems for the wall hooked dowels. Note that the footing X-bars must be hooked at the right end. ASDIP FOUNDATION generates a sketch of the wall footing in plan and elevation showing the rebars, similar to the construction drawings.

Takeaway
